How does a heat pump work?

Air source heat pumps

The heat energy in the air surrounding the heat pump unit is extracted and stored in a fluid inside the unit. The pump then compresses the fluid which boosts the temperature of the heat energy stored. This heat is then distributed to a property’s heating and hot water systems.

Ground source heat pumps

A heat transfer liquid is pumped through pipes buried deep in the ground, where it absorbs the ambient heat from the ground and warms up. The low grade heat is transferred through the heat exchanger, and then passes through a heat pump compressor boosting the temperature. The high-grade heat energy can then be used in a properties heating and hot water systems.

Non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

 

Businesses who install heat pump technology will not only benefit from reduced energy bills but will be eligible to apply for the Government backed Non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. The scheme is available to the commercial, industrial and public sectors and encourages businesses to use a renewable energy solution for their heat demand, paying them for the heat energy they produce. As an MCS accredited installer, all installations we complete are eligible for RHI payments.

Combining heat pumps with solar PV

 

Combining solar PV with air source heat pumps is a great way of utilising both renewable energy systems. By simply adding a solar hot water diverter to your solar PV system you’ll be able to use the excess energy generated to provide energy to heat your hot water.

On a sunny day a solar PV system can provide enough electricity to run a heat pump system whilst there is still demand for heating or hot water. This will increase the energy savings made and enhance the environmental benefits of both renewable energy systems.
