HBS New Energies complete solar installation at 100 Bishopsgate 

HBS New Energies are pleased to announce the completion of a 49.7 kWp solar PV system to the roof of 100 Bishopsgate, a £450m, 40-storey city tower development located in the heart of London. At 172 metres, the east west solar array is set to be one the highest roof mounted corporate solar installations in the UK.

The PV system which comprised of Sunpower 360W solar panels and Huawei inverters will generate more than 44,000 kWh of zero carbon electricity per annum; helping to offset the buildings annual operating costs and saving the tower around 23,00 kg of CO2.

To ensure the solar panels can sustain the extreme weather conditions at such altitude, HBS’s in-house design team engineered a bespoke solution that is securely fixed to the building’s structure.

TClarke who completed the £34m electrical package for the 950,00 sq ft building for main contractor Brookfield Multiplex appointed HBS New Energies as its partner to design, supply and install the skyscraper’s complex solar requirements.

Combining photovoltaics alongside energy efficiency measures ensured the building achieved its 23.7% improvement over Part L 2013 and the targeted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ environmental rating, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in central London. We are extremely proud to have been selected by TClarke to complete the solar installation for this high-profile project and ensure it achieved its renewable energy targets to the highest quality standards.

To engineer and install a solar system on top of a building this high is a complex and challenging process. The project took a great deal of planning and coordination between HBS and TClarke, which enabled the completion of such a well-engineered PV system. Especially when faced with the extreme conditions presented by the work environment, which meant we had to stop work on several occasions.

Working alongside TClarke we have been able to really push the parameters on where photovoltaics can be safely installed whilst still making it financially viable.
