HBS Employee Spotlight on Aedan Carroll

Throughout this year we will be showcasing a series of motivating stories on how our people are progressing in their chosen careers at HBS. We will be exploring how they are helping the business adapt and build for the future during what has been a challenging year.

In the spotlight this month we welcome one of our newest team members, Aedan Carroll, who recently joined HBS as a Quantity Surveyor in the Electrical Division. We sat down with Aedan to gain an insight into his career to date, what attracted him to HBS and learn more about the types of projects he will be working on and his goals for the future.

What is your career background?

After deciding against a career in science. I left school at 17 and gained experience working in various trades such a tarmacking, landscaping and carpentry. This experience got me interested in the construction industry. I decided to go to college and then university in which I met someone who worked for a company that had a branch of smaller subcontractors. I ended up working in dry lining and fire protection for nearly 3 years, doing document control and administration.

As I progressed with my degree, I started to take more commercial responsibility for the buying and pricing of tenders in my role. This saw me take over the quantity surveyor role of a £12M contract for a high-rise fire stopping project.

What made you decide to become a Quantity Surveyor?

Since school maths has always been my strongest point. I liked the idea of working with numbers and money. Originally I wanted to study architecture as I loved the idea of being able to design and build your ideas.

But, as I progressed through college my interest in quantity surveying grew and I knew it was a career path that I wanted to pursue.

Monitoring costs and getting commercially involved in projects has always been of interest. The level of costs that go into projects and how business works to ensure ethical profit is interesting. I think you never stop learning how business works throughout your whole career no matter the experience.

What attracted you to the opportunity at HBS?

HBS appealed to me because it has been an established family-run business for many years and has successfully expanded to the size it is today. James Hayter confidently expressed the perks of working for such a friendly yet professional company, one that is yet to reach its peak and will continue to grow.

The opportunity to grow and fulfil my career ambitions within such a successful business was a very attractive aspect.

How will HBS help you develop the skills you need as a Quantity Surveyor?

HBS has already exposed me to a wide range of projects which I have never been involved in before. In addition to management support, I also now have access to a wide range of tools and software that I had never used before, which will make the job more controllable.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

Working within a friendly environment has always been important to me. I’m looking forward to getting to know the whole team more once COVID-19 isn’t an issue. I am also looking forward to expanding my knowledge within the electrical division and the construction industry.

I’m excited to see the range of projects HBS are working on and becoming a key part of the team to support these from start to finish.

What types of projects will you be supporting?

I will be playing a key role in supporting a wide range of new build residential projects that the electrical division is on. I will be controlling the variations and ensuring budgets are kept for the duration of these projects and guaranteeing they run smoothly, financially.

What are your future career goals?

I hope to grow within HBS and get the chance to look into the mechanical and PV side of quantity surveying. Once I have continued surveying for a few years I would love to have the opportunity to have more responsibility and work with the directors on a commercial management basis.

One day, I would like to be a commercial manager, overseeing the commercial aspects to ensure all the divisions are financially strong and support further growth and success of the company.
